The music evokes the timelessness of the Indian landscape, a thoughtful, ambient journey connecting spaces, moods, forms and ideas in an endless drone of futurist allegories to native sounds.
Right at the start gongs like reference invoke a tranquil, higher plane followed by fluty, creaky notes, of still water, a boat cutting across a lake. Bagpipes with a lilting been like quality, bring up an ancient past still lurking somewhere. Churning, shifting, static sounds mix with moments of chant and attune to the abstract, you take a dip and lo, its nowhere land….
A baul-duggi kind of upbeat rhythm and synth-speak set up an electronic sonnet in the sky suggesting themes of wanderlust and travel in time before phasing out with an earthy, soft drum and rattle, like a ritual concluded. Perky festive rhythms play sounds of forest, crickets & bees abuzz, calling on primal voices of the wild…… the piper returns with a requiem to all things passing by, and soft, faint cowbells augment a stellar, out-worldly procession. As the prep drums roll to mark a new beginning, natives call to the jungle spirit. The human voice and body sway to the sounds of robust drumming, thus liberated…..
You look up at the sky, the limitless astral heap has a resonance, deep and meaningful. The flute plays on…you are back at the lake…the time didn’t stop, it never was. The Be Open medley samples a wide variety of musical influences that includes ambience, electro and an entire spectrum of wind, percussive and string instruments. Hints of sitar, faint tabla flicker, Santoor, Sarod, Shehnai, Jal Tarang, Rudra Veena, Mridangam, Dholak, Thumba, Harmonium, bass drums and soft bell like sounds add the eclectic Indian vibe to the piece.
