Project Description

Quick Dive is diving equipment that reduces the dangers of scuba diving while decreasing its complexity in so far that it allows one to experience the fascination of the sport without the prerequisite of acquiring a time-consuming and expensive diving license. By reduc-ing the maximum diving depth to 10 meters, Quick Drive lessens physical strain and makes scuba diving accessible to people who do not pass the medical check-up for scuba divers.

The equipment consists of a spout-regulator combination that allows a seamless change from snorkel breathing to compressed air breathing. The pressure reducer to which the compressed air tank is connected automatically increases the breathing resistance when a depth of 10 meters is reached, thus signaling to the scuba diver the necessity to gain height. In this way, the size of the equipment is reduced from 30 kg to 6 kg, and the preparation time decreases from about 25 minutes to 5 minutes.

HGK/ Masterstudio Design at the Academy of Art and Design of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwest Switzerland in Basel

HGK stands for the Academy of Art and Design. The HGK can also be designated as the Acad-emy for Contemporary Culture. In our research and our teaching — as in our practice, our reflections and our social discourse — the Academy endeavours to make significant contributions to contemporary culture.

Developed from the College of Arts and Crafts and its traditions, The HGK is open and modern; it is organized pluralistically, in line with our globalized era; and it is networked with other uni -versities, both within Switzerland and abroad. It encourages creativity and innovation through approaches that are process-driven, progressive, project-oriented, practical and productive.

The Masterstudio Design projects focus on integrative design — i.e. holistic design activities, which integrate knowledge from various disciplines into design practice and design culture, together with the arts and sciences, in a productive process. The aim of this synthesis is to create innovative solutions in projects involving art or design, while taking into consideration current social, economic and ecological conditions. From this point of view, the Masterstudio Design is a laboratory in which design is understood and experienced as an integrative process.
