Julian Schnabel

Artist
Born in New York in 1951. He was a student of the University of Houston (1969-1973). He received his B.F.A. and returned to New York to pursue an independent study program at the Whitney Museum of American Art. His works are openly exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Guggenheim Foundation Museums, New York and Bilbao; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Tate Gallery, London; The Metropolitan Museum, Tokyo; The Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid; The National Gallery, Washington, DC; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; Kunstmuseum, Basel; and Foundation Musee d’Art Moderne, Luxembourg. In 1996, he penned the screenplay and directed the films Basquait, a biopic on the painter Jean-Michel Basquait, a New York artist and Julian’s friend. It was selected to participate in the 1996 Venice Film Festival. His second film “Before Night Falls” received the Grand Special Jury and Colpa Volpi awards for the Best Actor (Javier Bardem) at the Venice Film festival in 2000. The film was on more than 100 top lists of the year, and actor Javier Bardem for his role in “Before the Night Falls” was nominated for the Best Actor award both by the American Academy of Motion Pictures and the Golden Globe, In 2007, Schnabel released his third film “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”, which earned him the award of Best Director at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and the Golden Globe for Best Director. “The Diving and the Butterfly” was nominated for the Academy Award in four categories, including Best Director.
