YOUNG TALENT AWARD
BE OPEN is launching a Young Talent Award to scout out emerging designers and give them support whilst they develop their work.
An annual prize, the Award will consolidate the debate around the quality of contemporary design. Most design prizes are created to celebrate a career, or a product, rather than to foster solutions for a better world. BE OPEN’s Young Talent Award allows the Foundation to act as a patron of contemporary design, seeking out and incubating new talent. The ultimate aim is to showcase brilliant young designers and integrate them into the working world, bringing their thinking to life.
Each year, a theme that connects to BE OPEN’s activities will be set to guide the jury’s choice. This year the theme is North/South/East/West, with a focus on industrial design. It is hoped that the award will become a reference point in the career of every ambitious young designer.
The emphasis in this prize is on productivity scholarships, research and theoretical speculation. Candidates can be undergraduates, but should be in the transitionary phase between academia and professional life. They should be able to demonstrate sound design capabilities, but will be judged on their potential, rather then on work achieved to date.
The Award is intended to act as a bursary to support day-to-day living expenses, so that winners can continue to work at their own pace, experiment with both practical and imaginative projects and discuss their ideas for production with corporates, laboratories, industry professionals and mentors. BE OPEN will also support the production of any one product made by the winner during this year.
Since the essence of this project is to promote and integrate young designers into the working world, the jury will be mainly comprised of industry professionals who will each propose a shortlist that reflects a specific aspect of design, helping to highlight an emerging topic each year. Winners will be asked to present their work at an exhibition that will coincide with the next Awards ceremony, or another important BE OPEN event. The first winner will be announced during the summer 2014.
