Prize fund of the Contest stage in Milan, April, 2012 - EUR 10, 000

The first prize — tuition fee payment in one of the leading specialized educational centres. For example: School of Visual Arts (NY), Domus Academy (Milan), the program is chosen by the Organizer). Plus a grant of EUR 10, 000 (ten thousand euro) is presented for the implementation of the prototype, pre-layout or home page of the winner’s creative project.

The second and third places: tuition fee payment in one of the leading specialized educational centres. (Organizer’s choice). For example: School of Visual Arts (NY), the program MFA Designer As Author, Domus Academy (Milan). The authors of 10 best project and 3 winners will get certificates from BE OPEN AWARDS.

Three BE OPEN award winners in Milan

In first place is ALEXANDRA GINEVA from Russia, who receives a grant of 10,000 euros for the implementation of her project, which combines a futuristic winery, vineyard and spa.

Second place goes to ALBERTO VASQUEZ from Hungary, for an innovative public lighting project powered by a vertical wind turbine, to serve off grid locations.

In third place is MICHAL WROBLEWSKI from Poland, for an ingenious graphic design scheme for Polish television NTL.

All receive tuition fees to attend a course at leading international institutes of design. The three were selected by a jury of design specialists from a shortlist of ten, which in turn had been whittled down from over one hundred submissions from around the world.

The Theme of the Contest

Projects presented in any category, style, trend, view and form of architecture, design, media, communication, urban planning and corresponding to the theme of the BE OPEN Contest are accepted for the Contest.

The main selection criteria of works are:

— relevance,
— stylistic novelty,
— functionality,
— feasibility,
— being in demand.

The authors in their works are welcomed to avoid limitations and bear in mind market trends. This approach will allow young and talented creatives to show work that is far beyond the scope of accepted thinking, but will form the basis of existence for people around the world tomorrow.

Criteria and evaluation parameters:

Context: what issue does the object reference?; why do people need the proposed object?
— Idea: Is the idea unexpected and original?
Image: does the look of the idea attract attention?; can we consider its appearance to be unique?
Synthesis: have you been able to express the full notion of the idea?; is the implementation accurate, technological and innovative?
— Trend: will the work be on trend?; will it determine a new direction?

Nominations for the Contest*:

FORM.
Architectural projects and solutions considered to be unique will be welcomed in this nomination.

ICON.
Works of object (industrial) design will also be accepted for nomination. Contest objects should have the potential to be produced in series and maintain materiality at the same time (So it should be made clear how the object will be produced and what its material will be). Projects from related concept areas are also welcomed, eg: graphic design, package design, etc, plus ’boundary’ projects from corporate and graphic design, or from industrial and graphic design, etc.

CAST.
Multimedia, interactive and image video design works are welcomed in this category. They should be able to express new possibilities in such fields as: TV, cinema, interactive and multimedia video and animation. Boundary works are also accepted from other genres of multimedia art: lightning installation, network art, etc.

CITY.
Works on urban environment improvement methods, town-planning, energy-saving and environment-saving technologies are accepted for the nomination. In short, everything that relates to urban planning and profound complex development of urban centers.

PLUS.
Works which do not fit into any of these nominations, but, according to the participant, are consistent with the objectives of the project BEOPEN can also be accepted. *
